Wright County: continued progress

Wright County’s broadband coverage has been increasing over the last few years. They have BEAD funding come in in for fiber, which will help them reach the state goals. Subsequently, the retain Green status.

At the time of writing, the MN BEAD final proposal has not been approved, but the current proposal would mean coverage for 5,024 locations in Wright County. The majority of locations will get fiber but some will get a satellite or fixed wireless connection, which does not qualify as served in the MN statute.

There is still Line Extension funding yet to be distributed, which helps connect handfuls of  houses just beyond existing infrastructure. (Wright has benefitted from earlier Line Extension awards. So that seems hopeful for them as well.)

Statewide, there have been changes with local and national broadband providers, which also leads to uncertainty.

Locations in Wright: 5,024
The locations include a mix of fiber as well as of satellite and fixed wireless connections.

Local Government Match for State Broadband Grants:

Over the years, many local governments (County, Municipal, Tribal) have invested in broadband deployment. This year, I have tracked how much local investment has been used to match MN State Grants. Local governments invest in other ways too, but this was one number I could realistically find and quantify investment by county, which means investment in that county, whether by county, cities or other local government entity.

In Wright $703,900 was invested in three projects over the years.

Winona County: Rank goes from Yellow to Green

Winona County’s broadband coverage has gone up incrementally this year. Subsequently, they retain their Green status.

At the time of writing, the MN BEAD final proposal has not been approved, but the current proposal would mean coverage for 1,463 locations in Winona County. The locations will get a satellite connection, which does not qualify as served in the MN statute.

There is still Line Extension funding yet to be distributed, which helps connect handfuls of  houses just beyond existing infrastructure. (Winona has benefitted from earlier Line Extension awards. So that seems hopeful for them as well.)

Statewide, there have been changes with local and national broadband providers, which also leads to uncertainty.

Wilkin County’s broadband coverage has increased slightly in 2025; they are close to goal so they retain their Green status.

At the time of writing, the MN BEAD final proposal has not been approved, but the current proposal would mean coverage for 0 locations in Anoka County.

There is still Line Extension funding yet to be distributed, which helps connect handfuls of  houses just beyond existing infrastructure. (Wilkin has not benefitted from earlier Line Extension awards. So that seems like a strategy worth consideration.)

Wadena County’s broadband coverage has stayed about the same but they have almost ubiquitous coverage, which is why they retain Green status.

At the time of writing, the MN BEAD final proposal has not been approved, but the current proposal would mean coverage for 19 locations in Wadena County. Some locations will get fiber and the rest will get a satellite connection, which does not qualify as served in the MN statute.

There is still Line Extension funding yet to be distributed, which helps connect handfuls of  houses just beyond existing infrastructure. (Wadena has not benefitted from earlier Line Extension awards. So that seems like a strategy worth considering to reach the last households.)

Swift County: Almost there

Swift County’s broadband coverage dipped slightly in 2025, but I suspect that’s a map correction. They are so close to reaching the state broadband goals so they retain their Green status.

Stevens County: So close

Stevens County continues on the top ranked counties with almost 100 percent coverage, which is why they retain their Green status.

Stearns bump up from yellow to green but with grants on the way

Stearns County saw a great increase in broadband access in 2025. They are set up to get funding for fiber through BEAD, which helped bump them into Green Status.

Sherburne County: Great improvement

After a nice increase in 2024, broadband coverage in Sherburne County stayed stagnant in 2025 but it seems they are working with providers on BEAD projects so that should help in 2026. They retain their Green Status

Scott County: providers building in the area

Scott County has seen very incremental broadband improvements over the last couple years. They stand to get more fiber in the area with BEAD funding and in 2025, a couple of providers announced expansions. They retain their Green status.

At the time of writing, the MN BEAD final proposal has not been approved, but the current proposal would mean coverage for 1,866 locations in Scott County. The majority of locations will get fiber the rest will get satellite or fixed wireless connection, which does not qualify as served in the MN statute.

There is still Line Extension funding yet to be distributed, which helps connect handfuls of  houses just beyond existing infrastructure. (Anoka has benefitted from earlier Line Extension awards. So that seems hopeful for them as well.)

Statewide, there have been changes with local and national broadband providers, which also leads to uncertainty.

Over the years, many local governments (County, Municipal, Tribal) have invested in broadband deployment. This year, I have tracked how much local investment has been used to match MN State Grants. Local governments invest in other ways too, but this was one number I could realistically find and quantify investment by county, which means investment in that county, whether by county, cities or other local government entity.

Roseau County: So close but need to get traction again

Roseau County’s broadband coverage has been stagnant for the past few years. They are very close to goal do they retain their Green status, but they need a push to get closer.

At the time of writing, the MN BEAD final proposal has not been approved, but the current proposal would mean coverage for 92 locations in Roseau County. Some of the locations will get fiber, the rest will get satellite, which does not qualify as served in the MN statute.

There is still Line Extension funding yet to be distributed, which helps connect handfuls of  houses just beyond existing infrastructure. (Roseau has not benefitted from earlier Line Extension awards. So that may be a strategy worth considering.)

Statewide, there have been changes with local and national broadband providers, which also leads to uncertainty.

Rock County: Nearly Perfect

Rock County’s broadband coverage is almost perfect. They had 100 percent coverage to broadband of 100 Mbps down and 20 up in 2023 but now the maps show 99.91 percent. It is a map correction, but they are still very close and retain the Green status.

At the time of writing, the MN BEAD final proposal has not been approved, but the current proposal would mean coverage for 48 locations in Rock County. However, those locations will get a satellite, which does not qualify as served in the MN statute.

There is still Line Extension funding yet to be distributed, which helps connect handfuls of  houses just beyond existing infrastructure. (Rock has not benefitted from earlier Line Extension awards. So that might be a strategy worth considering for the last few households.)

Redwood County: Moving up the ranking

Redwood County’s broadband coverage has been improving steadily over the years and now they have edge into the above 90 percent barrier. Subsequently, they have bumped from Yellow to Green status.

ranks 57 (up 6 places) for broadband access out of 87 counties. Redwood County went from almost 40 percent coverage in 2021 to 82 percent now. Last year, they worked on better broadband with the help of a Lead Fellow and a broadband survey. Redwood County’s work getting the community engaged with a survey will likely help them strive to get federal (BEAD) funding once it becomes available. That is how they retain their yellow ranking.

Half of the locations are slated for fiber; the rest will get a satellite or fixed wireless connection, which does not qualify as served in the MN statute.

Red Lake County: Four years of ubiquitous broadband

Red Lake County ranks 1 for broadband access out of 87 counties. They have 100 percent coverage to broadband of 100 Mbps down and 20 up. They haven’t invested local government funding, nor have they benefited from Line Extension but they got there.

Ramsey County is a metro-based county where the market makes it feasible for broadband providers to serve broadband profitably. Ramsey County is very close to reaching the state broadband goal; they retain their Green status.
