ECE expands broadband from east of Hinckley to the Wisconsin border (Pine County)

The Pine City Pioneer reports

East Central Energy is continuing its over $300 million ECE Fiber broadband internet buildout as construction nears completion in northern Pine County across a swath spanning east of Hinckley to the Wisconsin border.

Broadband Manager Dennis Rice shared, “Multiple contracted crews have been actively working throughout the area. Mainline fiber construction follows ECE’s existing overhead and underground power lines, with work scheduled Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.”

Residents and businesses in Pine County are encouraged to explore plans, pricing, and add-ons, then sign up for service at ecefiber.com.

The cooperative has seen significant growth in all areas of the project, with the most visible progress being member connections. In January 2024, the cooperative had 12 members connected to ECE Fiber. Since then, over 4,000 additional connections have been made, with more being added every week.

CTC is deploying fiber to Breitung Town (St. Louis County)

The Timberjay reports...

At their meeting on May 20, the Breitung Town Board approved the permits allowing CTC to begin laying fiber optic cable to bring high-speed broadband internet to parts of the township. Residents on Mallard Dr., Puncher Pt., and along Hoodoo Pt. Rd. up to the McKinley Park Campground will get the service.
CTC has been working with the Bois Forte Reservation and local townships to get permits and install broadband in as many places as possible with available funding. Initially, broadband was supposed to be installed to Echo Pt. and McKinley Park Acres but the prevalence of bedrock made that cost-prohibitive. If residents in these areas are interested in high-speed internet, it’s important to visit goctc.com to request service. Board chairman Matt Tuchel said his goal is to eventually get service to all parts of the township including Indian Point.
Service will begin later this year or in early 2026 depending on location. Service charges start at $65 per month for 250 mbps with additional faster tiers at $85 for 500 mbps and $100 per month for 1 gbps.
McKinley Park Campground already has broadband service.

East Central Energy to bring fiber to North Branch

Isanti-Chisago County Star report...

North Branch residents will soon have access to fiber internet from East Central Energy so state-of-the-art (according to ECE) it outclasses networks in the metro area.

ECE’s broadband manager, Dennis Rice, presented an update on the project to the city council, saying construction of the first stage of the network will likely be complete by August, with fiber connection “drops” to residences starting construction by November.

What’s more, Rice said, ECE members who sign up will pay no fees beyond the monthly cost of service: not for the drop, the in-home equipment, the wi-fi extenders, or even fees for long driveways.

“It’s a tremendous value with that,” Rice told the council.

The five-year project started in 2022 and will cost $350 million total, Rice said. Initial construction will focus on areas with ECE members who do not already have broadband internet access, and will expand eventually to even include non-ECE members.

Congrats to Gary Johnson and happy retirement

The Bemidji Pioneer has done a nice write up of Gary Johnson, retiring CEO of Paul Bunyan Communications…

All the while, Johnson became one of Bemidji’s most prolific community leaders. As a Rotarian, he led the effort to launch the Lake Bemidji Dragon Boat Festival. As a board member of Greater Bemidji Economic Development, he was instrumental in creating the LaunchPad entrepreneur support center, the 218 Relocate remote worker recruitment effort and the NorthStartUp Pitch Competition for new business ideas.

He also has guided Paul Bunyan’s Communications efforts to create the annual GigaZone Gaming Championship and TechXpo, and the Lumberjack Games.

“Gary is one of the most effective leaders I have ever met,” said Greater Bemidji Executive Director Dave Hengel. “In fact, I would be hard-pressed to find anyone who has had a greater impact on our community than Gary over the past decade.

“He is passionate and cares deeply about Bemidji. He is one of those leaders who people naturally like to follow not only because of his passion and energy but also his humility. He is a true community steward.”

The Minnesota Star Tribune reports...

High-speed internet is coming to farmers, rural homeowners and businesses in Crow Wing and Morrison counties.

Consolidated Telecommunications Co. in Brainerd, a rural broadband cooperative, was awarded a $5.5 million loan and $5.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service. Federal officials visited Brainerd this week to announce the funding as part of $313 million awarded nationwide through President Joe Biden’s Investing in America agenda and USDA’s ReConnect Program.

Andy Isackson, the co-op’s chief marketing officer, said nearly 600 homes will be connected to broadband with the funding. That includes 2,831 people, 67 businesses and 78 farms, the USDA said.
