5 INVESTIGATES created an interactive map showing operational, decommissioned and proposed data centers in Minnesota.
Most of the facilities are either enterprise data centers or colocation facilities.
Enterprise data centers are operated and maintained solely by one company and most often sit within the footprint of a corporate or global campus. Colocation centers are owned by third-party companies that rent space to private businesses for servers and computing equipment.
Both enterprise and colocation centers have been in Minnesota for more than a decade and many are receiving sales tax exemptions from the state.
