US Bank experiences security troubles

According to Minneapolis St Paul Business Journal

A second round of attacks on USBank.com appeared to be under way on Wednesday, but a U.S. Bancorp official said the website was holding up — so far.

Customers reported on Twitter that they could not access the website, a problem bank representatives attributed to high traffic volume. A group that took responsibility for similar denial-of-service attacks in September said this week it would soon target U.S. Bancorp and four other American banks again.

The surge in traffic started around 10 a.m. Wednesday, U.S. Bancorp (NYSE: USB) spokesman Tom Joyce said. Previous attacks lasted through business hours.

“Right now, our site is performing well. That said, we have seen unusual and coordinated high traffic volume coming to the website, clearly designed to slow the system down for consumers very similar to what we saw and all the other banks saw a couple months ago,” Joyce said.

An interesting aside from the CIO Panel I wrote about earlier today – one of the CIOs mentioned some security issues – attempts anyways and added that if you say you haven’t seen any questionable activity, you’re lying. I think it helps make the case for increased interest in security at all levels.
