At the Border to Border Broadband Conference, Heather Gold of the FTTH Council provided a quick overview of the new FCC program to expand the uses of the Connect America Fund. Yesterday I watched a webinar presentation on the topic. You can find the webinar and/or the slides here http://www.ftthcouncil.org/p/cm/ld/fid=72
The next step in the process is to submit letters of interest to the FCC – who you are, the area you would like to serve with broadband, the selected technology, the anchor tenants covered and your partners. They want an estimated cost of construction and some operational details. This is a non-binding statement of interest rather than an application.
The FCC will use these letters and prospective projects to create the rules and the budgets for the formal program to be announced in the early spring. There would then be a short application window during which you can apply. So in addition to the letter, communities really need to start working with their prospective partners to be ready to put in an application.
I encourage you to review the webinar and plot your next steps.
