The Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board is set to vote Tuesday in St. Paul on a $1.5 million grant to expand broadband Internet service to rural areas.

The grant will go to Clinton Township on behalf of Northeast Service Cooperative and Frontier Communications for a $4.34 million project that will bring broadband to 877 homes and 30 town halls and fire halls across 20 townships on the Iron Range.

The board was set to vote on the same project in December but delayed action to see if the project was in conflict with privately funded broadband efforts. IRRRB staff determined that there was no conflict. It’s the agency’s largest effort to expand broadband so far.
