One very cool app they have adopted is Adopt-a-Hydrant

Adopt-a-Hydrant allows you to claim a fire hydrant to keep clear of snow so that fire fighters will be able to fight fires more effectively in emergencies.

You claim a hydrant online. Then send you an email reminder when it snows. You shovel out the hydrant. Nice!
