Campaign contribution app

You want to donate to your local candidate? Now there’s an app for that. The Hill reports…

Mobile payment application Square unveiled a feature on Friday to allow candidates and political organizations to accept donations through iPhones and other mobile devices.

Once campaign workers plug in Square’s card reader into the headphone jack of their smartphone or tablet, they will be able to swipe people’s credit cards to accept donations on the street or from campaigning door to door.

And in case you’re running for office or running a campaign here are the essential details…

Square accepts major credit cards and works on iPhones, iPads and Android devices. The company keeps 2.75 percent of all payments made through the app.

Square has been offering similar e-commerce applications for regular shops for quite some time now and in fact they have created special apps for the President Obama and Mitt Romney but I’m glad to see a special application for local candidates because I think it’s important that local candidates are technology users and what better way to get people connected than offer them a new way to raise money! And if you think you notice the dead cell zones when you’re trying to make a phone call – just imagine trying to take a payment. It helps make the case that broadband is essential infrastructure!
